On behalf of the entire UNC Medicine family, I want to express our profound sadness on the passing of our dear friend, Dr. Christopher C. Fordham, III. We extend our condolences to Mrs. Fordham and the entire family.
Dr. Fordham was a giant in American medicine and higher education. He led the UNC School of Medicine and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to new heights of excellence, all the while increasing our focus on serving the people of North Carolina — all of them.
A few days ago, I was at the memorial service for Chris and it was a wonderful mixture of celebration and mourning — for the life and leadership of Dr. Fordham. And over the ensuing days, I have heard a series of stories — told by people whose lives intersected his. They, and we, are all the better for those experiences.
During the past four-plus years, as I have been privileged to be his successor as dean of the School of Medicine, I have visited with Dr. Fordham many times. He was unfailingly courteous and friendly — but he also gave me his sage advice about a whole series of topics. I will miss him.
